Writer, Director and Producer
Deborah "Devyn" Chuang is a Taiwanese-American filmmaker recognized for their work as a director, screenwriter, and producer. Their debut short film, Mom, if I Were a Vampire, premiered at NewFest in New York City before screening at numerous international festivals, including Taipei Film Festival. Following its festival run, the film became an online cult hit within the queer community, attracting thousands of reviews and comments on letterboxd. They were named a semi-finalist for the New Voices Filmmaker Grant by NewFest and Netflix in 2023.
Their second short film, Strawberry Shortcake, premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival, where it won the Short Forum Award for Best Short Film. It later screened in competition at the Sitges Film Festival and at numerous other international festivals, including the Atlanta Film Festival, BAFICI, and BFI Flare. Most recently, Devyn was nominated for the Princess Grace Award by Columbia University.
Born in Los Angeles and raised in Taipei, Devyn earned a B.S. from UC Berkeley and worked as an investment banker and Michelin-starred restaurant cook before studying film at Columbia University and La Fémis exchange. Heavily influenced by horror and cult cinema, they specialize in elevated genre films, often exploring themes of identity and sexuality.
Devyn had lived and worked in ten different cities internationally, including Taipei, San Francisco, Berlin, Tokyo, and New York City. Devyn is fluent in English, Mandarin, Taiwanese, and Cantonese, with a working knowledge of Japanese and French.
